In 1841 census is aged 16 and living with his parents and sister Mary at Bridgegate, Rotherham. In 1851 census is aged 26 and living in Pigeon Lane, Rotherham (now Howard Street). He was a Cabinet Maker. In 1861 he was iving at 28 Oil Mill Fold, Rotherham with his family. In 1871 census he is living at 14 Howard Street, Rotherham with his wife Mary and 5 children. He was a cabinet maker. In 1881 census is living at 70 & 72 Norfolk Street, Rotherham (next door to his son Edward). He was a cabinet maker. In 1881 census he also has living in the house a Rupert Hunt, Grandson, aged 8. This must be the son of an unknown daughter who married a Hunt. In 1891 he is still in Norfolk Street with his wife, daughter Bertha and sister Mary A Hickman. In 1901 he is recorded as a Grocer and Beer Seller.
