Notes Aged 6 in 1861 census, so born about 1855. A Solicitor. Owned a boat called the Thistle - actually a steam yacht. The following is from the Sheffield Who's Who of 1905: "Mr. Joseph Hardy Pickford was born on January 27, 1856, at Sheffield, his father being Mr. Joseph Pickford, manufacturer. He received his education at the Paradise Square Academy, Sheffield; was admitted a solicitor in 1884; and afterwards became associated with Mr. Peter Bancroft Coward in the firm of Messrs. Oxley and Coward, solicitors, Westgate, Rotherham, and Sheffield. With his partner he holds the position of Clerk to the Rotherham Rural District Council. In the control of the affairs of this body, Mr. Pickford has shown marked aptitude. Cycling and motoring are his chief methods of relaxation. In the latter pastime he has taken special interest, and has done a good deal to encourage reliability trials, exhibitions, etc. He is a churchman. Residence: Leafy Bank, Moorgate, Rotherham." Joseph Pickford secured a job for his nephew Arnold Pickford Rawson when he returned to England from South Africa. Working at Oxley and Coward's was his future wife, Eveline Walker Parkin.
